MHS junior, Eric Armstrong, won first place at the regional English Speaking Union Shakespeare Competition,
held at Lewis and Clark College. He was supported by the local
McMinnville ESU Branch, acting coach Judith Miller, and MHS Drama
Director, Bethany Mason.

Through this unique competition, students are encouraged to develop
their communication and acting skills, as well as an appreciation of the
power of language and literature. Eric’s first place award is an
all-expenses paid trip to New York City in April to compete in the
nationals competition.

Eric came into the Drama department last year as a sophomore, and he
brought a lot of gusto and dedication with him. He made an impression on
me because when he didn’t get cast in a play right away, or get into
the advanced class that he wanted, he didn’t give up. He kept on trying,
and that stood out because I don’t see many kids persevering through
disappointment like that.

He is a disciplined actor and works hard to advance his acting craft
and to be involved with theatre on all levels. Beyond being involved in
my plays, he has participated in a summer intensive acting program in
Seattle, has been in a show at the local Gallery Theatre, and he also
spearheaded the Talent Showcase last year at MHS.

Eric is definitely a mover and shaker, I couldn’t be prouder of his recent win at the regional ESU Shakespeare competition.
