Last
Friday, nine freshmen were recognized as a “Student of the Month” at a
Friday morning reception in the Grizzly Café. The event wrapped up the
monthly recognition program for the 2014-15 school year.

The Student of the Month recognitions are part of Smaller Learning
Communities (SLC), which provide a personalized learning environment
built on rigor, relevance and relations.

The freshman SLC teams – Cascade, Coastal, Ochoco, Siskiyou, and EASA
– honor students each month based on a range of attributes such as
being an underdog success story, a focused and diligent student, a kind
and sweet person, and a “peer favorite.”

Assistant Principal and Director of Secondary Education Tony Vicknair
kicked off the festivities, noting the students all brought something
unique and valuable to the school and said he “can’t wait to see how
they develop and contribute over the next three years.”

The morning reception for recipients and their families featured a
tasty breakfast buffet and coffee station prepared by the Culinary Arts
students (ProStart).

As families applauded and snapped photos, one recipient mentioned her
surprise at the nomination, saying “I didn’t think anyone would notice
me.”

The final group of “Student of the Month” honorees for the 2014-2015
school year includes (from left) Griselda Ceja, Kassandra Orozco, Judith
Hartzell, Daisy Amezcua, Nick Montelongo, Quynne Baker and Kaline
Buhler (not pictured: Daniel Jaquez and Melissa Bolanos).
