Nutrition services staff are getting the school kitchens ready for a new school year. Part of their back-to-school training included an inservice training on Monday by nationally known nutritionist and school lunch expert Garrett Berdan.
Berdan, who provides hands-on training at schools around the country, led staff through a review of standard kitchen tasks, such as knife skills and safe food handling, and updated them on new requirements for school meals as part of the National School Lunch Program.
He reminded staff that feeding kids is hard, and it is important to make meals visually appealing as well as tasty. "Kids who have other options won't be return customers if it isn't," he said.
The McMinnville School District has established a high-quality food program for school meals, serving local produce and ensuring higher than required nutrition standards. Berdan recognized staff for their efforts. "You are all known for being top quality for your food service program in the state of Oregon," he said.
