Posted on 01/22/2019

Five McMinnville High School (MHS) students earned honors in the state competition for the Scholastic Art Awards.  Across the state, 2,604 students entered 7,007 individual pieces of art and 270 portfolios.

Seniors Keelie Grasley and Carly Szedlak won Gold Key recognition for their work (see below) and will advance to the national competition in New York City in the spring. If they win at the next level, their work will be feted with a ceremony at Carnegie Hall and showcased at the prestigious Pratt Institute.

Other students recognized for their work include Julia Rue, Gissell Rubio and Lydia Stroe. (Click here to see of photo gallery of the winning entries.)

“This year, instead of competing regionally, our students were automatically entered in the Oregon At-Large region,” said MHS Visual Arts teacher Christine Garrison.  “This made the competition even more fierce than in years past.

“Portfolio judging is especially rigorous as judges examine eight projects for creativity, voice and technical skill,” she said.

Gold Key winners are eligible for a $10,000 scholarship and Gold/Silver portfolios are eligible for a $1,000 award.
