FAQ
Rigor – My student feels that there is not enough rigor at this school and won’t be prepared for college/AP classes

We offer Pre-AP work and in 2009-10 will offer AP classes
Our literacy coach continues to work with core teachers to help them improve their instructional practices.
PBL is rigorous – students are not just learning academics, but are applying what they know. PBL project rigor increases with each project this year.
We ask students to Explore, Create, Honor and Own. Part of Exploring is to move outside of the comfort zone and experiencing learning differently.

Rigor and Homework: I ask my child about homework, and he says that he doesn’t have any. How is this preparing him/her for college?
Math assigns homework daily. Please ask your student to show you his/her completed math homework.
Rigor and homework are not synonymous. Often, homework is work that is extra or is at the lowest level of the intellectual ladder – the knowledge and comprehension level. Rigor happens when students apply, synthesize, analyze and evaluate information. We don’t want to give homework for the sake of homework.
Rigor and Core: Why are we learning the same thing as last year?

Subjects like science and literature have a few key themes that run through them and repeat. Students may have explored similar themes throughout their education. However, each time a student revisits a theme, he/she is able to explore that theme with greater depth. Instead of knowing about a concept, the student may now apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluate it.
