The Media Arts & Communications Academy, or MACAcademy for short, is a new small, tech focused, college preparatory high school option for McMinnville School District students. All staff and students at MACAcademy are CHOOSING to be here – a unique situation that sets a tone for learning and growing together. Students who will thrive at MACAcademy are those who want a smaller, personalized environment with a digital media focus.
MACAcademy is:

  • a small, personalized school with a community culture
  • thematic, project-driven courses that blend subject area learning
  • digital technology used across subject areas and elective offerings

MACAcademy offers:

  • Technology as a focus for teaching and learning, including student projects involving web design, radio/television/Internet broadcasting, film making, and other digital presentations.
  • An academic program that prepares students for life after high school, including entrance into the Oregon University System.
  • An inclusive small community of learners that is equitable for all.

The MACAcademy community believes in:

  • students, parents, teachers, and community members coming together to do high school differently
  • education tied to the community and rigorous enough to prepare students for college
  • support for students to achieve their goals
  • a small school where students and staff know each other
  • a school where digital media are used for teaching and learning in every class

Activities and Sports
: All MACAcademy students WILL be able to participate in extracurricular activities offered by MHS, including after school athletics and clubs.

MACAdemy Awards

The Macademy award is an award that you definitely want to receive before you leave your high school experience at MACA, what exactly are the Macademy Awards? We asked Caan Zarosinski this question along with a few others.

“The Macademy Awards reward students for modeling our philosophy of ECHO: Explore, Create, Honor, and Own. We love it. We have all seen our fellow students living this philosophy and being leaders. We are proud of all of you.” Caan informed us. What is the criterion for being selected? “Students are nominated by the staff based on how well they represent the ECHO” He added, “My favorite part of school is giving out Macademy Awards!”

MACA Reflection On First 2 Years

The first 2 years of MACA has seen a lot of change, we spent the first year establishing our identity as a school in McMinnville, and trying to figure out the most effective way to run our school. It has not been easy for anyone, though everyone has learned and grown so much since the beginning of the year its crazy. So many students at the MACAdemy are stepping up to take on leadership roles and help make our school a better place. I have never seen or heard of a school that gives so much power to the students, we have learned over the course of these 2 years through Project Based Learning, and the endless opportunities for students to step up and speak out, that with great power, comes great responsibility. I have seen many of the students take on that responsibility, and do amazing things, I wouldn't transfer from MACA to any high school in the world, there are just too many opportunities to be individual in this small school community, and turn out amazing projects. I know almost everyone in the school (including staff), its great, the teachers all work with the students on an individual basis, and that is very important to me. I love MACA. - Devon Hays, Junior.
