This week, more than 120 educators from 21 districts around the state
visited McMinnville School District to observe instruction and
classroom practices. Buel and Grandhaven elementary schools hosted the
classroom visits. They are top performing “model” schools. The Model
Schools Conference was scheduled as a one-day event to allow visitors to
speak to educators and observe classrooms as a group rather than in
individual visits throughout the year.

The tour started at Evergreen Aviation Museum where Superintendent
Maryalice Russell greeted the educators. The group boarded buses to the
two schools where they were able to stop by several elementary
classrooms in session. They also spoke to instructional leaders and the
principals of both schools.

During the afternoon session, the visitors heard presentations from
Buel Principal Stephanie Legard, Grandhaven Principal Margie Johnson and
Newby Principal Dave Carlson. Breakout sessions were offered afterward
on research-based practices and data teams.
