William, Wayne and Mel Rutherford have given a gift of $10,000 to the McMinnville School District to support instrumental and choral music programs, including:
- Festival, performance, and competition entrance fees: An important component of music education is public performance, receiving feedback from master teachers and experiencing peer performances.
- Guest Artist programs: Providing opportunities to bring distinguished artists to McMinnville to work directly with students and teachers, helping to enhance their skills and expand their artistic vision.
- Music field trips: Exposing McMinnville music students to diverse genres.
- Instruments and supplies: Needed instruments and supplies that will enhance student and program outcomes.
“We so appreciate this gift from the Rutherford family,” said Dr. Maryalice Russell, superintendent of the McMinnville School District. “When former students give back to their schools, that support not only builds community, but it also signals to current students that what they’re doing and learning is important and can affect them for years to come.”
The Rutherford family, William and his two sons Mel and Wayne, all graduated from McMinnville public schools and are supporting the development of the district music program in honor of John C. McManus. McManus served as music director in the McMinnville School District from 1950 – 1967. He was the 1965 Oregon Teacher of the Year and the 1966 Distinguished Music Educator of the Year.
