The McMinnville School Board gave a heartfelt sendoff to Dr. Scott Gibson, who officially retired from the board at last night’s business meeting.

Dr. Gibson will move out of the school boundaries after the first of the year, which makes him ineligible to serve on the board.

Gibson, who has served for six years, was honored by fellow board members who noted his boundless enthusiasm and support for public education.

The board unanimously voted to appoint Dr. Paul Haddeland to complete Gibson’s term, which expires June 30, 2019.

Haddeland has lived in the McMinnville School District for nearly 25 years. He served on the Long-Range Facilities Task Force for the 2016 and 2006 bonds and has also served on the district’s Finance Committee. Dr. Haddeland was a co-chair of the Citizens for Good Education for the 2006 and 2016 bonds. He also serves as McMinnville High School’s team physician.

In other board happenings, a group of Sue Buel Elementary students, led by librarian Sharon Buehler, demonstrated a unit on civil discourse.

The students modeled a Socratic Seminar by debating the merits of year-round school. Students showed how to conduct a productive conversation and how to respectfully disagree with another point of view.
