Fifth grade Memorial student Oscar Marksbury Page has been named a state-wide winner in the Oregon Blue Book 2019-20 essay contest. He will be recognized at an event at the Oregon Capitol on Tuesday, March 19, in Salem.
The contest theme was “Celebrating Oregon’s Local Festivals,” and Oscar’s piece and illustration describe the annual “Alien Days” festival and costume parade. The essay covers the history of the UFO sighting and how the festival marks the anniversary of the flying saucer captured on camera in 1950.
The March recognition is part of the official release date for the Blue Book, a biennual publication that is the official directory and fact book for Oregon. The book includes information on the state, city, county and federal governments in Oregon; educational institutions; finances; the economy; resources; population figures and demographics.
Oscar will be recognized on the Oregon House and Senate floors, in the Secretary of State’s Office and with a signing ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda.
Congratulations, Oscar!
