STEM Educator Recognized by McMinnville’s Distinguished Service Awards
Elementary STEM teacher, Brian Bixler, has been named Educator of the Year by McMinnville’s Distinguished Service Awards. The annual awards will be held on May 13, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. at The Grand. Hosted by McMinnville City Club, the awards celebrate those in the community who go above and beyond in service.
Mr. Bixler has spent the past 20 years in the district. The nomination for the Distinguished Educator of the Year Award read:
A lifelong learner, Mr. Bixler continually seeks ways to grow professionally in order to better serve his students. He participated in a competitive professional development program at MIT, bringing innovative ideas and practices back to his classroom. He has also worked extensively with outside authors and industry leaders, bringing them to our schools and panel discussions that connect students with real-world careers, ideas, and inspiration.
Mr. Bixler’s impact extends beyond students to the broader education community. He partners with local colleges and their education programs, offering future teachers an authentic, inside look at what the field of education is truly like. Through this mentorship, he helps prepare and inspire the next generation of educators.
He is also deeply committed to supporting his colleagues and strengthening the profession. Mr. Bixler volunteers his time serving on MEF and advocates for educators through his work with the teachers union. His leadership reflects a strong belief that thriving schools depend on collaboration, advocacy, and community support.
One of his most meaningful contributions has been his leadership in our robotics program. By introducing robotics and engineering concepts at an early age, he ensures students have the opportunity to discover a love for science and technology where it matters most—at the very beginning of their educational journey.
Brian Bixler’s passion, leadership, and commitment make him a cornerstone of our schools. His influence reaches far beyond his classroom, inspiring students, supporting colleagues, and enriching the entire community. For these reasons, he is an exceptionally deserving nominee for Outstanding Educator of the Year.
Mr. Bixler is perhaps best known for his work to bring a “Moon Tree” to Willamette Elementary. He applied to NASA for the seedling, which was germinated after a trip around the moon aboard the Artemis 1 mission in 2022. This recognition connected students to a remarkable piece of space exploration history.
