The McMinnville School District began a program of Chromebook checkout for K-12 students to access its supplemental education and distance learning supports during the state-wide school closure.
The district launched optional learning supports, both online and print packets, on April 1. When state guidance was updated to incorporate distance learning, with teachers and students teaching and learning in different locations, the district expanded its remote learning plans to “Distance Learning for All,” scheduled to begin April 13.
Chromebooks have been distributed to families who preordered. Please note that students do not need to check out a Chromebook if they have an Internet-accessible device at home, and Chromebooks do not need a hot spot if the home has Internet access.
Also please note that students may also choose the paper packet option.
HOTSPOTS
The district has a limited number of hot spots, with more on backorder. The available hot spots will be prioritized for high school senior use and distributed to lower grades as available. Please note that Chromebooks do not need a hot spot if the home has internet access. As hotspots arrive, those who have signed up will be contacted based on the priority system.
INTERNET ACCESS
If a family does not pay for internet access, there are other possibilities. The district is beaconing WiFi from all schools 24/7. The WiFi name is “MSD-afterschool” and no password is required.
Comcast has also launched an initiative to offer free internet during the COVID-19 pandemic. Find out more here and click here to find out how to locate a WiFi hotspot locally.
CHROMEBOOK USE
Students will access online learning resources through the Clever portal. Click here for detailed instructions on how to access Clever. The “Distance Learning for All” curriculum, both online and print, will all be accessible through the MSD Family Resources portal.
Once checked out, Chromebooks must be cared for by student families. Click here for cleaning instructions (Spanish).
