Tips for a Smooth Transition
(Spanish) Our community partner Lutheran Community Services Northwest has shared the following tips to help students come back to school after Winter Break.
-
Reestablish Routines Early
Gradually shift bedtimes and wake-up times before school resumes. Reintroduce routines like packing lunches and preparing backpacks. This helps mornings run smoothly and reduces stress.
-
Talk About Feelings
Check in with your child about how they’re feeling. Validate their concerns rather than brushing them aside. Practicing role-play for school situations can build confidence.
-
Healthy Sleep and Eating Habits
Consistent routines with balanced meals and enough sleep help children adjust more easily and reduce stress-related behaviors.
-
Visual Checklists
Create a simple morning or after-school checklist. Checking off tasks helps kids feel organized and successful.
-
Fun After-School Activities
Plan low-key, enjoyable activities such as reading together, baking, or crafts. These provide children with something to look forward to after school.
-
Model Positivity
Children reflect adult attitudes. Speak positively about school, highlight exciting opportunities, and remain calm during the transition.
