New option includes fall break
(Spanish) The district received a lot of positive feedback from families and staff about adding a “Care & Connection” day to last November’s calendar. Research also shows that school breaks can be beneficial to student learning and mental health for both students and staff.
With that in mind, the MSD Calendar Committee decided to propose a school calendar option that includes a fall break for the 2022-23 school year. The fall break would extend the Thanksgiving break to a full week. Several school districts in our area incorporate a fall break into their school calendar.
The proposed fall break would move the start of the school year to the last week of August and incorporate a four-day weekend for Labor Day. The August attendance days would be used to set structure and routines, so schools could move more quickly into academic instruction after Labor Day.
Another consideration for the fall break is that many families travel out of town during Thanksgiving week, and student attendance is typically low.
The other calendar option would be the traditional school year calendar, with classes beginning after Labor Day and Thanksgiving break remaining Thursday and Friday.
