Paige Lomas, third grade teacher at Columbus Elementary, today launched a new session of Success Now called “Web Writers.”

Targeted to third-fifth graders, the after-school session is designed to develop informative writing skills among the more than 20 students who signed up.

With a special news feed on the Columbus website, the students will publish their reports and photos on various happenings at the school. With the help of Columbus ELL assistant Ruth Valdez, student work will be published bilingually.

“I’m really excited about using this forum to teach writing,” said Lomas. “Not only will the students improve their writing skills, but they will also have a chance to learn about media literacy, which is becoming increasingly important in the digital information age.”

Success Now is part of the McMinnville School District’s after-school program and is partially funded by a grant from the Oregon Department of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers.
