Community invited to Student Safety Summit

The summit will offer information, resources and contacts to the school and local community as we work together to support the safety and wellbeing of our local teenagers. Beginning at 6 p.m., the summit will include a 20-minute general session in the MHS auditorium, followed by two break-out sessions, beginning at 6:20 and 6:50.   

The summit is organized in partnership with several local agencies, including the McMinnville Police Department, Yamhill County Health and Human Services Family and Youth, Yamhill County Juvenile Department, and the Willamette ESD.

Threat Assessment Process (MHS Room A126)
Learn about our team approach developed to provide a collaborative system of evaluation and support for students or situations within the school community.

Is My Teenager Exposed to Drugs? (MHS Den)
Presenters offer tools for supporting your teenager as well as some look-fors in adolescents who might be under the influence. This includes a show and tell of the latest paraphernalia that teenagers may have in their possession that might be important for adults to recognize.

Anxiety and Depression in Teens (MHS Library)
Participants hear about what to be aware of with adolescents who might be battling with anxiety and depression. This includes physical, mental and emotional symptoms that may be visible at home and some first steps to address the concerns.

Social Media Apps Teens are Using (MHS Food Court)
Every day, young teenagers are experimenting with new social media applications on their phones, laptops and tablets. Yet most parents do not know what these are and how teenagers use, and sometimes abuse, these apps. In this session, parents learn about some of the latest apps that teenagers are using and what adults at home should know.

Responsible Technology Use Prior to High School (MHS Atrium)
A young elementary or middle school student just got their new phone, tablet or laptop? Wondering if they are spending too much time on the device or what they are doing on the device? This session provides tips, ideas and look-fors as our parents and guardians of new technology users to keep them safe and responsible.

Cyberbullying (MHS Auditorium)
Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place over digital devices, usually through social media or text messaging. In this session, participants learn about what to look for if your teenager is a victim of cyberbullying or a perpetrator. In addition, participants hear about strategies to get support for your teenager if they are a victim of cyberbullying or to help prevent them from being a victim.
