Recently, a group which identifies itself as “West Side Iron Workers for Justice Coalition” has picketed the district office and high school protesting a subcontractor who was hired by the district’s general contractor to work on the high school construction contract.

The group met with Superintendent Maryalice Russell to express previous safety concerns they had when working with the iron subcontractor in another location.

The McMinnville School District values safety and looked into the concerns they expressed. The district has been assured by its general contractor, LCG Pence, that all safety standards will be met (see attached letter from Lee Zumwalt, LCG Pence Construction Project Manager).

Additionally, attached is a response letter from LCG Pence to specific claims made by the protesters.

The McMinnville School District is engaging in a number of construction projects to improve school facilities.  In accordance with Oregon law, the district engaged in a process to select a general contractor.  The general contractor is responsible for the selection of subcontractors.

Any concerns about safety or health for workers of any contractor may be reported to the Oregon Occupational Health and Safety (OSHA) agency.
