The McMinnville School District has launched an “Attendance Matters: All Day, Every Day” campaign to raise awareness about the impact of chronic absenteeism. The campaign dovetails with the Oregon Department of Education (ODE)’s efforts to educate communities on how attendance affects student achievement.
The campaign highlights the importance regular attendance plays in student outcomes, whether the absences are excused or unexcused. Not attending regularly – missing just two days a month is considered “chronically absent” – affects the student’s learning progression and impacts the whole class when teachers must accommodate for the absences.
Students who create a good attendance habit are more likely to read at grade level, perform well in secondary schools, and are even more likely to succeed in college and a career.
Local organizations can help by posting signs on their business entrances and windows. Signs are available at the district office at 800 NE Lafayette.
