The McMinnville School District (MSD) was honored for its outstanding safety program at the “PACE Day: Safe and Secure Schools” event in Salem today. The award recognizes the district’s safety initiative.
The award, accepted by the district’s safety officer Jack Crabtree, recognizes MSD’s School Safety and Preparedness program, a holistic approach to increasing school and student safety. The program encompasses the following:
- Environmental design to prevent school violence;
- “Run, Hide, Fight” active-shooter training for all district staff, middle and high school students, school PTAs, and the school board;
- In-district CERT Team (Community Emergency Response Team) and ongoing cross-training with city and county emergency responders;
- Participation and collaboration with county and statewide simulations focused on natural disasters such as the expected Cascadia Subduction Zone quake;
- Close collaboration with city and county emergency responders, including sharing of emergency binders/kits for each district facility that includes site maps/blueprints, utility shut-off locations, roof access points, contacts, entrance fobs, and other key instructions;
- Earthquake equipment and supplies training for key staff, including emergency kits for homes, schools, vehicles, and emergency supply sheds located throughout the district;
- Radio communications training;
- Verbal de-escalation training; and
- Creating and sustaining “See something, Say something” school culture and climate.
The PACE Awards recognize achievements that better serve the students of Oregon.
