Eighth grade Duniway student Emma Arvin has been named a state-wide winner in the Oregon Blue Book 2021-22 essay contest.
The contest theme was to honor Oregon state parks, in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the opening of Oregon’s first state park, Helmick Park in Polk County.
Emma’s essay and illustration feature Silver Falls, the biggest state park in Oregon. The piece describes her favorite hiking trail that leads under the South Falls and the sound of the rushing water and feeling the spray on her face.
The illustration is of a downed tree Emma saw in the park on a family hike.
Her essay and drawing will be included in the next edition of the Oregon Blue Book, and she will be invited to the State Capitol for the official Oregon Blue Book release party and celebration in early 2021.
Emma’s essay and drawing were submitted by Jessica Sloan, 8th grade Language Arts teacher at Duniway.
The Oregon Blue Book, a biennial publication, is the official directory and fact book for Oregon. The book includes information on the state, city, county and federal governments in Oregon; educational institutions; finances; the economy; resources; population figures and demographics.
Congratulations, Emma!
