Four students Honored at International Mathematical Modeling Challenge

Four Duniway Middle School students came away with honors in the International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (IMMC), organized by COMAP (Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications) this spring. This prestigious global competition challenges students to tackle complex, real-world problems using mathematical modeling, fostering critical thinking, collaboration and the practical application of mathematics.

Duniway’s team (from left) Ryan Lai, Claire Sun, Mackenzie Mendonca and Michael Sun earned a Meritorious designation, placing them among the top teams worldwide. This achievement is a testament to their hard work, creativity and the strong academic foundation they’ve received at Duniway. Adviser and Duniway math teacher Paige Klopfenstein was also acknowledged in the official competition results.

The IMMC is widely respected in the mathematics and education communities, attracting participants from top schools across the globe. Students are challenged to analyze a real-world problem, develop a mathematical model, and present a well-reasoned solution—all within a tight timeframe. Earning a Meritorious designation places the students among the world’s best problem solvers.

For this competition, the team tackled “The Modeling Musical Tour,” and analyzed a musical performer’s past tours and develop a model for planning future ones. The problem required students to consider factors like the number of concerts, venues, ticket prices and strategies to maximize fan attendance, venue utilization and profits. The team incorporated the economic status of fans to ensure the tour planning was inclusive and accessible to a broader audience.

Congratulations Duniway team!
