Schools Practice Earthquake Response

This morning, McMinnville Schools participated in the Great Oregon ShakeOut, a statewide earthquake drill for emergency preparedness.

Every school in the district practiced the recommended sheltering action of “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” beginning at 10:17 a.m. and then emptied the building. Staff followed procedures on updating attendance, collecting parent emergency information, preparing for evacuation and shepherding the children to a safe location.
The district participates regularly in fire and earthquake drills, including coordinated drills like the Great Oregon ShakeOut, which was created to help organizations and families prepare for the impending megaquake.

The drill includes two of the Standard Response Protocol actions. The first is “Shelter,” the drop, cover and hold on drill for earthquakes, and “Evacuate,” the process of moving children to a safe location and accounting for all students and staff.
