This week, McMinnville High School FFA members were busy with a couple of events. Four MHS Horticulture students/FFA members – including (from left) Luis Garibaldo, McKenna West, Chase Cashen and Jack Friberg – competed in Floriculture and Nursery contests in Seattle.
MHS junior McKenna West placed 11th individually in the nursery contest that tested her knowledge in landscape practicum, tools, landscape plant identification, general knowledge test, team activity, pests and disorders, and more.
At the floriculture contest, students competed in plant identification of houseplants and cut flowers, pests and disorders, team activity, general knowledge exam, problem solving and television commercial.
Noteworthy individual placings were McKenna West, 15th place; Luis Garibaldo, 18th place; and Jack Friberg, 19th place, with very consistent scores. The team scored fifth in test as a group.
“It was a great bonding experience,” said Horticulture pathway teacher Kerry Naylor. “It was also a wonderful opportunity to visit Molbak’s Nursery, the ‘Nordstrom’s of Garden Centers’!”
The second FFA event was the Lower Willamette District FFA District Convention. In the elections for district officers, McKenna West was voted in as the District Treasurer. Congratulations McKenna!
