The McMinnville School District (MSD) will join an international event next week called an “Hour of Code.” Created to coincide with Computer Science Education Week, this year celebrated December 9 – 15, the event is a one-hour introduction to computer science.
The event intends to demystify computer coding, show that anybody can learn the basics, and broaden participation in the field of computer science. Research indicates that learning to code can also nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity.
“We celebrate computer literacy district-wide during this week, but we promote it all year with activities like after-school coding clubs, summer camps, robotics at all levels and Makerspace activities that use coding,” said Dr. Maryalice Russell, superintendent of the McMinnville School District. “We want to equip our students with 21st century skills to build a foundation for career fields that our students may not be thinking about yet or don’t even exist yet.”
The Hour of Code takes place every year during Computer Science Education Week, which was created to honor the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906). The ‘Hour of Code™’ is a nationwide initiative by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org to introduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming.
