The bus will be parked near the Grab and Go meals pickup and staff will hand out treats to children.
“We started the bus project before the pandemic hit,” said Cinthia Hiatt-Henry, director of Nutrition Services for the district. “Eventually, we envision using it in the summer months to deliver meals and give children a place to gather for lunch, nutrition education and other activities.”
The bus was donated by First Student and was retrofitted with a traveling kitchen with a grant from the Oregon Department of Education’s Summer Food Service program.
The bus features a range and cooktop and propane oven, hot and cold holding areas, and a hand sink. The bus has a wheelchair lift that can also be used for food carts, and there will be seating for students inside and a window to serve people outside.
(Note: children will not be able to enter the bus at this time due to physical distancing guidelines.)
