Memorial Elementary’s after-school coding club visited last night’s School Board meeting to show members what they’re learning about computer programming.
Principal Dan Sheppard introduced the club and teacher Karen Wenzel, who leads the group of second and third graders in the twice-weekly activity.
The students demonstrated some of the activities they’re exploring like creating a video game, programming a mini-robot, and playing a puzzle programming game.
Wenzel talked about some of the concepts the students are learning, including programming, algorithms, looping and debugging. “It’s important for kids to learn coding because we want them to not just be technology users, but technology creators,” she said.
The program is funded by a Technology Integration and Innovation grant from the Oregon Department of Education.
In other board business, the 2017-18 School Calendar (option #2 from the survey) was adopted.
