Congratulations to McMinnville High School (MHS) teacher Krista Carpino (far right) and her culinary team that won first place this weekend in the 2017 ProStart® Culinary Championships! The students, (from left) Luis Garibaldo, Hanna Eby, Karissa Olsen, Kaylyn Clevenger and Devin Baldwin, competed on Sunday against 14 other schools across the state. The MHS team won first place overall and was also honored with the “Best Overall Teamwork” award.
The students concocted a three-course meal in one hour, using only butane burners and no electricity. The menu included Dungeness crab miso custard, Thai shrimp cakes and a bittersweet truffle torte.
The team qualifies for the national ProStart competition, scheduled for April 28-30 in North Charleston, South Carolina, and wins a share of $100,000 in academic scholarships. The MHS ProStart team, which is part of the Culinary Arts Career Pathway, has competed in the state competition since 2007. This is the first-ever state championship for the high school.
