Carly Loving, a senior in the EASA and Fabrication & Welding pathways, wrote a winning essay that netted the welding lab a pile of new equipment.

The competition was open to students enrolled in a welding instructional program at a secondary, post-secondary, technical, or vocational school. The essay had to address one or more aspects of the theme, “A Cut Above,” and be no longer than 500 words.

Carly wrote about becoming involved with welding because of her interest in engineering and participation in the EASA program.

“The contest is a great opportunity to show students the importance of the basic skills of reading and writing in all career choices,” said Fabrication & Welding teacher Chip Ford. “The new equipment is a welcome addition to the shop and gives our students a variety of equipment to operate and gain experience with different machines.”

Carly was awarded $250 for her essay and says she spent a portion on Nike gear and deposited the rest into her savings account. The school was awarded a package of welding and cutting gear valued at more than $4,000 including:

  • An ESAB Migmaster® 215 Pro Ready-to-Weld Package
  • A  Victor® Medalist 250 Medium Duty Cutting System
  • A  Thermal Dynamics® Cutmaster™ 42 Air Plasma Cutting Outfit
  • Two ESAB Aristo® Tech HD high definition welding helmets
