In honor of Alter Wiener, Patton Middle School Drama is presenting the production “And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank” by James Still.
The play is a unique multimedia theatrical experience that combines videotaped interviews with Holocaust survivors Ed Silverberg and Eva Schloss, with live actors recreating scenes from their lives during World War II.
Ed was Anne Frank’s first boyfriend, and she wrote about him in the beginning of her now-famous diary. Eva Schloss was the same age as Anne Frank and lived in the same apartment building in Amsterdam. On Eva’s 15th birthday, her family was arrested by the Nazis and sent to concentration camps. Eva and her mother survived, and after the war her mother married Otto Frank (Anne’s father). This production is a historic documentary brought to life on the stage.
The play is showing in the Patton Commons on March 14, 15, and 16 at 7 p.m. and March 17 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for general admission; $3 Students and seniors. Note: due to content, the show is not recommended for children under 12.
Part of the proceeds from this production will be donated to the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education in Alter Wiener’s name.
For many years, Mr. Wiener visited Patton eighth graders to speak about his life and experience as a Holocaust survivor. He was struck and killed by a car while crossing the street in December 2018.
Students participating in the play visited the Museum on March 1 to gain a deeper understanding of the topic. They listened to guest speaker, David Fuks, whose parents were both Holocaust survivors. They then toured the museum to explore life as a Jewish person in Oregon and how the Holocaust affected immigration to the United States.
