The McMinnville School District launched a new season of Ready for Kindergarten with the first of three workshops for parents of pre-kindergarten students who were born before September 1, 2017.
The workshops each cover a different topic and are designed to help parent and guardian participants prepare children with the early learning skills needed to start and stay at grade level throughout their school career.
“We read a lot with our kids,” said one father at the event. “But this is really useful, interesting information. I can see how this can really make a difference.”
The research-based workshops are held at the district’s three schools that offer preschool: Sue Buel, Newby and Wascher. The workshops at Newby and Wascher are targeted to parents of preschoolers ages 4 – 5 and the Buel workshops include workshops for children ages 0 – 5. All workshops are offered in either English or Spanish.
Each site offers dinner and childcare for attendees. Each participant also receives a bag of age-appropriate books and educational toys designed to reinforce the workshops’ learning goals at home.
The next two Thursday workshops are scheduled for November 16 and February 15.
All families that reside in the McMinnville School District are invited to register. Funded by grants, the program and materials are provided at no cost to families.
