For some district students, Saturday mornings are all about reading.  This past weekend, Columbus and Wascher students began a five-week camp intended to better engage young students in literacy.  The students are invited to attend by their classroom teachers.

Run from 9 to 11:30 a.m., the camps start with breakfast and provide reading time and activities.

About 30 students, ranging from first through third graders, attended the camp at Columbus.  The students were broken into groups of about 10 and each group was led by a retired McMinnville School District (MSD) teacher.

From reading picture books aloud to working on booklets with their pictures on the cover, the students spent the morning immersed in literacy activities.  Activities ranged from Valentine’s Day themes to President’s Day themes.

“Becoming a strong reader in the early grades is one of the best ways to improve future academic success,” said Kyra Donovan, MSD director of Elementary Education.  “Having a Saturday Reading Camp is a way for our young readers to have a little extra time to practice reading – and to have some fun, too.”
