McMinnville
High School (MHS) was the site of Friday’s Yamhill County community
town hall meeting featuring Senator Ron Wyden. Community members and
students from MHS’s ASB leadership, AP history classes and Model UN club
spent 90 minutes interacting with the senator on a number of topics.
Zaira McKay, president of the MHS Model UN club, introduced Senator
Wyden, and McMinnville Mayor Rick Olson moderated the flow of questions
from the audience. Attendees interested in asking a question were given a
ticket, and ticket numbers were drawn at random.
“Our high school is an integral part of this community,” said Dr.
Kris Olsen, principal. “We were happy to open our doors to the public
and offer our students a chance to participate in the democratic
process.”
Questions from students ranged from immigration, standardized
testing, health care, minimum wage, sex trafficking and the cost of
college tuition.
