Spanish | We are making plans for the 2020-21 school year to provide a quality education for our students based on information that exists today.Following guidance from the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and the Oregon Health Authority (OHA), we have identified educational models we will be able to deliver next fall. To ensure both safety and quality education, we need information from you to determine the staffing levels and school schedules.
At the end of this message, you will have the opportunity to access an online form to share your plan for your student’s attendance in school next fall. Please complete the form according to what works best for your current family situation and information provided.
It is important to understand that last spring our educational delivery system, Distance Learning, was created quickly in response to the emergency school closure. We are developing a new and different plan for the 2020-21 school year. We have heard your feedback and are working to improve our plans moving forward.
Option 1: Hybrid (Combination of in person and remote learning)
This model follows the OHA and ODE guidelines of 35 square feet per person and six feet physical distance between persons to the maximum extent possible and follows OHA and ODE guidelines regarding hygiene, face coverings or masks, and physical distancing. The model has the flexibility to move to remote learning in the event of another emergency school closure.
Elementary Hybrid
Schedule: students will start at the regular elementary school start time and attend until 2:00 or 2:30 pm ( end of the student day still to be determined). Student learning will be in a face to face setting with the expectation to work at home remotely for approximately 30 minutes per day (such as using IReady Math or IReady reading) . Students should continue to have practice with remote learning in the event of a short term or longer term emergency school closure.
Most students will attend school at the school they attended during the 2019-20 school year (unless they were in the 5th grade and will now attend middle school). Due to school size and square footage limitations, Columbus incoming 5th graders will attend school at the Adams campus facility.
Secondary Hybrid
Students will attend school in a face to face setting two days per week and participate in learning at home three days per week.Our secondary schools do not have the capacity to have all our students in the building at one time, given the 35 square foot and 6 foot physical distance guidelines. However, we will have students from the same household attend school on the same two days of the week in grades 6-12 (for example, students whose last names begin with the letters A-L would attend school the same two days of the week even if one student was at middle school and their sibling was at the high school). Home learning will be remote: it is planned to be a continuation of learning from the classroom and may consist of a virtual check in, independent project or work, and short videos of instruction for review.
Schedule: Students begin and end their regular school day two days per week (attendance days to be determined by last name alphabet). At this time, we do not anticipate that families will be able to select which two days their student(s) attends, in order for us to balance enrollment and space allocation. Students will do school from home three days per week as a continuation of their learning from the two days in their face to face setting, which may consist of a virtual check in, independent project or work, and short videos of instruction and review.
Option 2: Comprehensive Distance Learning (100% remote learning)
This model will follow ODE guidance for remote learning programs and includes real time teaching and learning and recorded teaching and learning. This option does not guarantee that your student will remain connected with teaching staff from your boundary area school or the school you may have attended last year via a district approved transfer.
Elementary Comprehensive Distance Learning Schedule: Students will have a real time (synchronous) teaching and learning experience at regularly scheduled times daily. Students will participate in recorded time (asynchronous), such as a recorded lesson, complete posted assignments, and do independent project work. Attendance and grading will be required, as outlined in the ODE guidance.
Secondary Comprehensive Distance Learning Schedule: Students will have a real time (synchronous) teaching and learning experience at a regularly scheduled time daily. Students will participate in recorded time (asynchronous), such as a recorded lesson, complete posted assignments, and do independent project work. Attendance and grading will be required, as outlined in the ODE guidance.
