“United for Classrooms” project unveiled at School Board meeting

At last night’s business meeting, the School Board accepted a check for the newly launched “United for Classrooms” initiative. A project of the United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley, the initiative will fund $200 per elementary classroom in the McMinnville School District to help teachers support student needs.

The initiative is intended to address the impact of poverty on education and considers teachers to be “First Responders” for children. “United for Classrooms” is meant to combat the impact of poverty in the classroom.  

Elizabeth Schrader, of the United Way (pictured with board chair Dr. Scott Schieber), delivered the check and gave a short presentation on the new initiative, which is intended to be an annual event. The $27,200 check will be divided among 136 elementary classrooms in the district.

In other business, the board issued a proclamation declaring March 4 through 9 to be “Classified School Employees Week” and Grandhaven’s Scott Johnson gave a presentation about the school’s running club that utilizes the new  playground trail.
