All
elementary students in kindergarten, first, second and fourth grades
had vision screening tests this week. The annual tests are mandated for
students under age 7 and can help identify nine different types of
possible vision problems. If potential problems are detected, students
are referred to a doctor for additional evaluation.

The tests are coordinated by District nurses and provided by members
of the Lions Club with help from McMinnville High School students in the
Health Occupations Pathway program. They administer the screening tests
using digital cameras that screen for vision issues and record the
data. The tests screen for myopia, anisometropia, hyperopia, anisocoria,
gaze vertical, gaze nasal, gaze temporal, and gaze asymetry.

This is the second year high school students have assisted with the
vision screening, and it is the second year the screening cameras have
been used. The Lions Club provides the annual screening to elementary
students around the state. This year, they have screened more than
90,000 students.
