The McMinnville School District has partnered with community organizations to enhance its summer meals offered at most district schools. This year, the district is offering a new feeding site at the Redwood Commons apartments on NE Lafayette Avenue.
The McMinnville Public Library bookmobile visits the Redwood Commons site on Mondays from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.; the Villa del Sol apartments on May Lane on Tuesdays from 1 – 3 p.m. in a partnership with Buel Elementary; Wascher Elementary on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.; and Tice Park apartments on Thursdays from 1 – 3 p.m.
In addition to book check-out, community service groups, such as the Soroptimists and Lions Club, help stage hands-on activities such as science and art projects during the visits. The McMinnville Parks & Recreation also participates at the apartment locations, with staff and volunteers organizing games and activities for the kids.
“Keeping kids healthy and engaged is truly a community effort,” said Cindi Hiatt-Henry, director of Nutrition Services for the McMinnville School District. “We are able to provide nutritious meals to children all summer long and partners offer reading and recreation opportunities that keep kids active and learning.”
In addition to the bookmobile visits, the Buel Elementary library is open on Thursdays from 12 – 2 p.m.
The McMinnville School District participates in several child nutrition programs, including the summer meal program, which are federally funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by the Oregon Department of Education (ODE).
