last weekend at Silverton High School. The students, all sixth graders,
made it through the first round and were eliminated in the second round
of competition.

Vollmer, Kassandra Matthews and Jazmine Jones. School Board Member Larry
Vollmer, father of team member Dana Vollmer, helped coach the team.

The Oregon Battle of the Books is a state reading competition that
tests students’ knowledge of 16 books. A variety of subjects and genres
are represented in both fiction and non-fiction. Students form teams
consisting of 4 members who share the responsibility of reading all the
books. Competition starts in January at the school level. Each school
sends a winning team to a district competition. The district winners
advance to the regional competition and, if successful, to a state
battle.
