School to receive $5,000 from Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries

Wascher Elementary has been named one of 300 schools from 36 states across the country to receive a $5,000 grant through the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries. This year, the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries awarded $1.5 million in library grants.

“I’m so pleased that our library will be able to update its collection with this grant,” said Wascher Principal Scott Murphy. “Our librarian, Maureen Tracy, applied for this funding and plans to revitalize the library with a variety of new books that will engage students and encourage them to read.”

In the past year, over 500 books have been removed from Wascher’s library shelves due to out-of-date texts or worn out books. The grant will be used to purchase titles of award-winning children’s literature, books that focus on STEM, stories about children from wide-ranging backgrounds, and other kid-friendly titles that teachers and emergent readers have requested.

The Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries supports school libraries with the greatest needs with the goal of encouraging all students to develop a love of reading and learning. Since its inception in 2002, it has awarded $21 million to more than 3,600 schools across the country.  Mrs. Bush, a former teacher and librarian, also publishes an annual summer reading list. This year’s list includes “Ribsy,” a book by Yamhill County’s cherished author Beverly Cleary.

Grant applications for the 2023-2024 school year will open in late 2023. Visit laurabushfoundation.org to learn more.
