Hour Of Code Mcminnville School District Hour Of Code Mcminnville School District

Students across district introduced to coding during weeklong celebration

The McMinnville School District (MSD) joins an international event this week called an “Hour of Code.” Created to coincide with Computer Science Education Week, this year celebrated December 6 – 10, the event is a one-hour introduction to computer science.

The Hour of Code demystifies computer coding, shows that anybody can learn the basics, and broadens participation in the field of computer science. Studies show that learning to code can nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity.

“Participation in the Hour of Code’ is part of a district strategy to equip children with 21st century skills,” says Kourtney Ferrua, MSD director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessments. “Those skills can be the foundation for career fields that our students may not be thinking about yet – or jobs that don’t even exist yet.”

The Hour of Code takes place every year during Computer Science Education Week, which was created to honor the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906).
