MSD Nurses share tips on prevention

Every year, we recognize the third week in March as National Poison Prevention Week, in order to raise awareness about the risk of poisonings and how they may be prevented.

A poison is any substance that can harm someone if it is used in the wrong way, by the wrong person or in the wrong amount. Poisoning is the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States.

In the United States, cosmetics and household products are among the most commonly reported substances in child poison exposures. Among adult and teen poison exposures, pain medication is the leading cause. Poison prevention is in your hands.

Look around your home and use this checklist (Spanish) to make sure all poisons are safely stored. Keep poisons up and out of reach from children.
