Suicide Prevention

The mental health and wellness of our students is critical to our success in McMinnville School District. Over the past few years, have worked to increase our support for mental health and actions in the area of suicide prevention. We partner closely with Yamhill County Health and Human Services, Family and Youth; Willamette Education Services Division; and other experts to provide resources and support our team. Some of the steps we are taking include:

  • Professional training for administrators, counselors, teachers, and staff on suicide prevention, including QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Training on how to respond in crisis
  • The district prevention committee meets monthly to review our district suicide prevention plan and postvention work to provide ongoing support to students and staff who are impacted
  • Sources of Strength, a course at the high school launched in January 2025. This is a strength-based, upstream approach to preventing negative outcomes while promoting well-being, help-seeking, resilience, healthy coping, and a sense of belonging with peer leadership and empowerment.
  • Lines for Life, an organization that supports the education for youth around suicide prevention, has visited our health and PEP classrooms
  • We also have increased our counseling staff and mental health staff in the district and partnered with mental health agencies in the county to increase our site-based services
  • Our Wellness Summit in March 2025 brought professionals together to discuss these topics and their conversation and expertise is housed on our website
  • Raising Resilience, a partnership between MSD, the Resilient Mac parent group, and McMinnville Public Library has hosted community events and is currently reaching out to expand the conversation on fostering resilience for children growing up in the technology age

We will continue to do more in a relentless effort to meet the needs of our students. As we are all aware, despite these enhanced efforts, there remains a great need for our entire community to collaborate on behalf of the children in our community to ensure they have the resources they need to feel a sense of hope and belonging.
